R&B diva Alicia Keys graces the March 2010 cover of Gotham Magazine, wearing a Catherine Malandrino gown, dishes about love, her hit Empire State song, and sings praises of her hometown of NYC:
On being raised in Hell’s Kitchen: March cover-star Alicia Keys reveals to Gotham magazine about the rough neighborhood of Clinton New York that she grew up and reflect on how its changes, saying “When I was growing up, it was way darker, way more dismal, way more like the place where all the outcasts lived. So now, to see it more like a tourist destination is really interested,” the song-bird admits.
On how the Broadway lights inspired her as a child: Keys’ reflects on her more rags than riches childhood but tells the March issue of Gotham mag that while growing up the bright light keep her going, telling the mag that the one thing she always had was “those bright lights and it did always have endless possibilities, because Broadway was so close. Even thought Eight Avenue was supergrungy-drug needles and all kinds of dingy things- Broadway was a lot more creative and interesting and possible.”
On her collaboration with Jay-Z: Element, like Alicia Key’s previous four albums hit number one thanks in part to her collaboration with Jay-Z on New York City’s new anthem Empire State of Mind. Key’s recorded a less bombastic more introspective extensive of the original and Keys tells the March issue of Gotham mag that “Now they [both versions] have a life of their own, so it’s really beautiful.”
On the most important thing in the world: A true romantic, Alicia Keys admits that the theme of Element is love, lost, and found explaining to Gotham mag that “love does play a prominent role in the album because I believe love is the most important thing in the world,” Keys’ says. “It’s the one thing we can all understand.”
