On Wednesday (Sept 23), Micah Jesse was lucky enough to chat with 20-year-old pop singer Jason DeRulo, whose single “Whatcha Say” featuring Imogen Heap, is taking the radiowaves by storm!

Derulo was sought after by multi-platinum producer J.R. Rotem (Sean Kingston) earlier this year and quickly signed by Rotem and Kara DioGuardi of American Idol as the Beluga Heights | Warner Bros. flagship artist.

We can’t stop listening to the track [Click here to listen to "Whatcha Say"!], so it was very cool to chat with him today!

FYI: His song is #2 right now on the iTunes Top 10 list! Wow!

Here we go…

MJ: You’ve worked with some of the biggest names in the business, including Sean Kingston, T-Pain, Akon, Lil Wayne, which is incredible! Who else would you like to work with?

JD: I would love to work work with Prince and Madonna!

MJ: You started off in a performing arts school?

JD: I started at about 4 or 5 when my parents put me in arts school – I was always glued to the tube! I studied classical music, opera, jazz, tap dance, ballet, pop — you name it!

MJ: Did you parents have an impact on you starting in the industry at such a young age?

JD: Yes, because of the support they gave me! I always wanted this, so they were like, “Ok!” They were always supportive of my dreams! It was always in my blood.

MJ: The coolest thing — to me — is that you grew up in a small town (callled Miramar in Florida) and you’re a huge superstar now! Did you expect to be working on your debut album at 19 years old? So young!

JD: Actually I expected to be working on it so much earlier! When I was like 12 years old, I thought I’d be working on it by 15!

MJ: One of your biggest accomplishments so far is that you won Showtime at the Apollo — tell me about that!

JD: I was about 15, and I came out on top! Apollo is kind of a rough crowd because booing people is like the fun thing to do…

MJ: Speaking of people booing, and doubting your talent, especially at such a young age — do you ever have to remind people that you’re so young and have already accomplished so much?

JD: I don’t really want to do that, I don’t want to have to whip out my resume! But — I want people to know what I’ve done.

MJ: Let’s take this to The Fabulous Life — when people dream of being big one day…what’s the one big purchase that you always wanted to make? Did you purchase it already?

JD: Well, I bought myself a really nice place in Hollywood, and I’m in the process of getting myself one on South Beach (in Miami)!

MJ: Wow! Incredible — would you ever let MTV’s Cribs come in and show everyone what you got?

JD: Absolutely!

MJ: Hopefully I can catch someone’s eye at MTV! Let’s talk about you hit song “Whatcha Say” for a second — it features Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek” — can we expect any more collaborations on the album?

JD: Oh yeah! At this time, though, I have about 300 songs recorded that we have to break down to about 15. Once we decide which songs will be going on the album, it will be easier to figure out who I may want to work with.

MJ: You mentioned loving Prince & Madonna, is there anyone you would love to collaborate on this upcoming album?

JD: I would love to work with Taylor Swift, the Black Eyed Peas, and I really love Kings of Leon right now!

MJ: So let’s talk about acting! You’re like a jack of all trades! Do you plan on continuing to act?

JD: Oh yeah, definitely! Acting is almost equal to singing, for me! Just like I’ve studied all types of music, I’ve also studied many different forms of acting– television, Broadway, you name it! I was actually offered a role on Broadway, but I had to turn it down because my music was primary focus… but actually, I’m in a new movie on MTV called “Turn The Beat Around”!

MJ: Very cool! What actors and directors would you like to work with?

JD: I love Quentin Tarantino and Steven Spielberg! I would love to the superhero thing! As far as acting wise — definitely Megan Fox!

MJ: Can you talk about your love life? Do you have a girlfriend?

JD: I do not have a girlfriend – I’m single! Flying solo!

MJ: What do you look for in a girl?

JD: My biggest turn on is a big heart! A really sweet girl, down-to-earth, confident but not cocky!

MJ: Who are your heroes?

JD: Michael Jackson, definitely! He was a huge inspiration to me. But my mother, above all, because — I don’t know if she knows — but she really taught me the meaning of hard work! My mom was going to school, had a job also, and then came home to cook us dinner and read us bedtime stories and tuck us in — every night!

MJ: Thank you so much for chatting with us! We can’t wait to hear your new album!
