We posted the first letter yesterday from Barry A. Koffler, an orthopedic surgeon who is operating in Haiti — and happens to be the heroic father of Micah Jesse…

MJ just got his second correspondence from his Pops and had to share it with you!
“hi, things have settled down a bit. i will empty out the clinic where i am today. i have one more hip fracture to cast today. will be a 10-12 year old child in a spica cast which is less than optimal but better than what she has. she is 13 days post injury and will heal with a shortened, rotated leg if i don’t manipulate and cast her. the young pediatrician who is here with me gives her a little ketamine which will relieve her physical pain wipe out short term memory, it will not help the emotional pain. yesterday an ambulance arrived that had been donated by a canadian philanthropic group and i sent several amputees to a trauma clinic that was set up in port au prince. they will need stump revisions ie. probably shortenings from below knee to above knee amputations. the number of amputees is beyond belief. we have a little girl here with an above elbow who was riding a bike yesterday using her stump to steer. the resiliency of the people is heart warming. i don’t think i will every understand how people who have so little are so happy. maybe they know something i don’t?”
