Barry A. Koffler, MD PC
MJ’s dad, Barry A. Koffler MD PC, is back from Haiti — and as you can imagine — has many troubling stories to tell about his experience in the doctor’s quarters….
We posted his first and second letters and now we have his final correspondence to share with you…
“one of those experiences that will be indescribable. most of the injuries i see are crush injuries. the open ones are open fractures and amputations. the closed ones are femur and tibia fractures. these are the ones that i have been able to help. i have put many casts on after straigtening bones that have been displaced for almost 2 weeks. not ideal medical care. most should have had surgery but without manipulation and casting would have shortened, angulated and rotated legs. there is no xray anywhere near where i am. doing it by feel which is fun. hopefully there will be enough help here for follow up care in the next few weeks. tons of stuff gets here everyday but getting it up and running is difficult. anyway the 40 bed clinic that i have worked in will be empty by the time i leave tomorrow. found an ambulance team nearby that picked up the infected amputations and got them into port au prince which is where they needed to be.”

Wow. Thank your father for me. Most of us can only give money (which is still an important thing to do) but he was able to offer tangible help to a people desperately in need.
