Guide To Palm Springs: Micah Makes Moves

Last month, I joined Ford for a road trip to Palm Springs to celebrate #Icon50, in the latest 2015 Mustang convertible. My cousin/best friend joined me for what was going to be truly a trip to remember. We picked up our ride at the Sofitel in Beverly Hills and hit the open road. We made a Palm Springs Spotify playlist and sang and danced the whole drive. Keep your camera nearby, because there are many photo-worthy moments along the drive… You’re going to have the Best Vacation in Palm Springs so here are my tips… Have fun!

Where To Stay?

We stayed at the Viceroy Palm Springs (recently rebranded as The Avalon Palm Springs) and it’s everything you picture luxury to be, in the middle of the desert: lush gardens, picturesque swimming pools, spa, and one-of-a-kind bungalow style rooms. We couldn’t have been happier to stay there! Other great hotel options are the Jonathan Adler-designed Parker Palm Springs (Le Parker Meridian) and The Ace Hotel and Swim Club Palm Springs.

Where to Eat?

For breakfast and brunch, I recommend indulging at Norma’s at The Parker (chocolate french toast? Waffle with fresh fruit and brûlée crown!?) and Clementine Gourmet Kitchen. If you’re craving a truly legendary chopped salad, head to Melvyn’s at Ingleside Inn. For lunch and dinner, I recommend eating at Birba (strawberry balsamic pizza anyone?) and farm-to-table hot spot Workshop Kitchen + Bar and getting the sea bass and brussels sprouts.

Where to Drink?

The best gay bars in Palm Springs are Toucan’s Tiki Lounge and Hunter’s. Such good people watching.

What to Do?

Most people go to Palm Springs to relax by the pool. However, if you’re looking to get out and explore the open air (like I usually am), I recommend the following:

  • Looking to cool off and have some fun with your friends? Check out Wet ‘n Wild Palm Springs water park. It’s not the best water park I’ve ever been to, but it’s definitely not the worst.
  • Stargazing at the 29 Palms Resort – drive to Joshua Tree’s 29 Palms Resort, where there is hardly any light pollution, and the starry night is all yours, with the help of some powerful telescopes and knowledgable guides.
  • Palm Springs Aerial Tramway – the largest rotating aerial tramway in the World. This could be labeled as “touristy,” but it’s an experience unlike any other! Take a drive up to the Aerial Tramway, where you’ll be whisked up to the highest point mountain in Palm Springs in a 360 degree rotating gondola. At the top, you won’t believe how cold it is (there’s a 30 degree difference in the temperature from the base to the top)! Expert tip: there’s a full bar at the top in case you need a refreshment.
  • If you’re driving back to Los Angeles, you may want to consider stopping to shop at the Desert Hills Premium Outlets, where you can shop everything from American Eagle Outfitters to DVF, Prada and Moncler.
